Our mission
The Chambre des notaires du Québec is a professional order which groups together the 3319 or so notaries of the province. As in the case of the other professional orders, its principal purpose is to ensure the protection of the public which has recourse to the services of its members.
To this end, the Chambre des notaires supervises the training and admission of candidates to the notarial profession, controls the practice of the profession, and offers a broad range of services to persons who may be dissatisfied with services they have received, fees they are asked to pay, or a notary's conduct.
Although the great majority of notaries are irreproachable in the performance of the duties incumbent upon them in virtue of the Professional Code, the Notarial Act, and the numerous regulations arising therefrom, including the Code of ethics of notaries, it may happen on occasion that a notary's conduct or the quality of his services appears to be questionable. In such cases, the syndic of the Chambre des notaires, who is responsible for disciplinary matters, may be questioned as to the feasibility of requesting that an inquiry be held.
It should be noted that the syndic does not have the jurisdiction to investigate cases of error or omission which result in a financial loss to a client. These cases come under the professional liability insurance which all notaries must subscribe to. Indeed, the sole purpose of the disciplinary procedure is to discipline a notary who is guilty of a breach of duty.
